The Canary Republic is a constituent republic of the Commonwealth in the Canarii archipelago. It is the second most populous island of the region, and gives the archipelago its name. It is also the most diverse in appearance – the traveller heading north towards the capital will pass desert sand dunes, terraced farmland, pine forest, mountain peaks and a green northern coast in under an hour. The old Canarii called it “the continent in miniature.”

The Canarii, a Berber people who arrived from the Sahara some 2,000 years ago, had a complex society by the time the Portuguese reached the islands in the 15th Century. Their principalities were divided between guanartemes and faycanes, and they have retained a rich oral tradition. The organisation of Canarii society allowed the native peoples to mount some resistance to initial Portuguese colonisation, especially in the mountainous interior of the island. Today, Canary’s food and festivals draw on both Canarii and Iberian traditions.

The capital, Palmas, is the largest city in the Atlantic Region and is probably its most cosmopolitan. It is situated on the northeast coast and has a good natural harbour. The narrow sea between Canary and the West African coast has been crossed by traders, migrants and fishermen for centuries, which has carried on into the Commonwealth period.

Canary is famous for its Maspolamas sand dunes, which reach almost to the water’s edge at the island’s southern tip, and are replenished by winds off the nearby Saharan coast. The dunes are a protected environment of the Ministry of Landscape but welcome visitors.

Canary’s economy is the largest in the Atlantic Region after Tenerife, and the most industrialised. The port at Palmas handles considerable transshipment and processing between Africa, the Americas and the rest of the Commonwealth. Bananas and tomatoes are the main agricultural exports, alongside (exquisite) rum and cigars. The island also has manufacturers of consumer goods and textiles, and the Commonwealth Oil refinery at Palmas is the largest in the archipelago.

Climate

The south is hot, arid and receives almost no rain. The interior mountains are cooler and occasionally cold at altitude. The north coast is warm, humid and receives significant winter rainfall.
