The Kabuli Republic (the Nature Island) is a constituent republic of Vekllei in the Caribbean. It lies about 40km southeast of Karu, and its southern coast is just north of the northernmost part of Madiana. It comprises a single mountainous island of 750 square kilometres, and countless rivers numbering at least 300. The capital, Roseau, is situated on the southwest coast of the island of Kabuli.
The origin of Kabuli is volcanic, and the interior of the island is mountainous and thickly forested. The capital has a small harbour and is renowned for its bright-painted waterfront and the botanical gardens laid out above it in 1890. Morne Diablotin, an extinct volcano at 1,447 metres, is the highest point in the republic and home to the sisserou, an imperial parrot found on no other island. Like much of the Vekllei Caribbean, about four fifths of Kabulians are descended from black slaves brought there by the UK, many of whom escaped into the interior and were never recaptured. Other populations, including the Kalina who hold their own territory of 1,500 hectares on the east coast and form the largest surviving indigenous population in the Caribbean, make up the remainder. They are mostly Catholic, and keep Sunday closely enough that most businesses shut for it. They endure a wet tropical climate with no dry season, tempered a little by the mountains.
By Vekllei standards, life on Kabuli is remarkably rural, and farm produce accounts for most of its exports. Municipalisation after the war broke the coastal estates into common holdings, which now raise citrus, cacao and the bay laurel that supplies about four fifths of the Commonwealth’s bay oil. Its smallholders also grow much of Vekllei’s vanilla, and its northeastern estates supply a good part of the blended tea most Commonwealth households drink daily. The rest is ‘municipal goods’ – staple crops and a little light industry. What manufacturing there is sits in Roseau, and runs to lime cordial, soap and mountain artillery.
The island of Kabuli is home to the Kabuli School of Forestry, a constituent of CUWI teaching rainforest ecology and spice cultivation. Its students make up about a tenth of the population of the capital, and conduct the surveys behind the republic’s geothermal programme. Kabuli and its neighbours are linked by ferry. The capital has a tram network, and the Roseau Central Railway runs up the west coast to the second town of Portsmouth. There is no civilian airport. Kabuli is also the administrative seat of the Equatorial Division of the Armed Forces, which keeps Fortress Kabuli north of the capital and is the largest employer on the island.
Climate
Tropical and very wet, with over 250 inches of rain annually in the mountains. The coast is slightly drier but still humid year-round. No distinct dry season.
