The Lucayoneque Republic (also the Abaco Islands) is a constituent republic of Vekllei at the northern end of the Lucayan archipelago, north of Habacoa. It comprises two large islands as well as a long chain of inhabited cays, which shelter a sound of 160km known as the Sea of Abaco. The sound is some of the finest sailing water in the western Atlantic.
Most Abaconians are descended from the English loyalists who fled the American Revolution and refused to live under the new republic. This informs the contemporary character of the country, as conservative and self-sufficient. Man-O-War Cay is one of a handful of “dry towns” in the entire country, and very quiet. They fish for lobster and grow citrus, which form the basis of local cuisine.
The economy of the republic is built on boats. Its yards turn out wooden craft, commercial vessels and navigational instruments, a lot of which go to the rest of Lucaya. Most famous is the boatyard on Man-O-War Cay, which still works by techniques largely unchanged since the 18th Century. Abaco Polytechnic University is the constituent school of CUWI for materials science and disaster preparation. Its other major employers are all institutions of Commonwealth government.
Most people live in Harbour Town, on the central east coast of the main island. It has a good deep-water port, and is home to all the republic’s major infrastructure including the regional hospital, the university campus and the marina. The town has grown a lot under federalisation, and the harbour today is busy with work boats, pleasure craft and vessels of the navy.
Hope Town, located conspicuously on Elbow Cay, is home to one of the few manned lighthouses left in the Commonwealth. It is a handsome candy-striped tower dating to 1864, and is still wound by hand. The Lighthouse Service had plans to automate but the republic’s parliament has reliably voted against it. It draws perhaps a few hundred tourists a year. In the south of the main island is Abaco National Park, which is home to extensive pine forests and the breeding grounds of the endemic Abaco parrot. Visitors come to see the bone-fishing of the Abaco shallows, which is done from a traditional wooden skiff. The island is served by the Marsh Harbour Railway which runs the length of the main island, and the Hope Town Lighthouse Express which carries visitors from the landing on Elbow Cay up to the light house. Fast ferries connect the republic to Nassau daily.
