Universal Cotton S.c.L. is the largest clothing manufacturer in the Commonwealth, and a bureau corporation with a near monopoly over the country’s cottonwear and its upstream cotton suppliers. It consists of over a hundred estates, mills and clothing manufacturers grouped under sixteen constituent companies. Shirts, socks, underwear and towels are its most common products, and the quality of its product is such that basically every Commonwealth person wears something made by its many constituent corporations.
Universal Cotton is famous for its use of Sea Island cotton, an extra-long-staple cotton that is among the finest in the world. The Commonwealth is by far the largest grower of Sea Island cotton today. The bureau’s estates are found in thirteen republics, most of them in Kalina, and the largest are on the central plains of Kairi, where it also has regional ginning stations. Between them they produce about 1.4 million tonnes of cotton lint a year, of which some 320,000 tonnes are sold abroad as raw cotton. The rest is spun and woven at two large fabric works in Oslola and Kairi, which make about 560,000 tonnes of fabric a year, and around 250,000 tonnes of clothing is made from it.
Clothing is a “staple good” in the commons, and Universal Cotton supplies most department stores in the country as part of the National Comfort scheme. Undyed white cotton shirts are the most common garment in the Commonwealth, and almost all of them are made to its designs. The bureau also produces factory schematics and product designs which are licensed to small factory lots through the Commons Industrial Bureau, so that identical shirts can be made all over the country. The plain white shirt, cotton socks and underwear have barely changed in decades, and are well liked for their softness and durability.
Overseas, Sea Island cotton gives its clothing some luxury status, and it is sold under the Universal Cotton Company brand as well as a number of sub-brands, including Mia and Sova & Gillis. Including its sub-brands, Universal Cotton is a major international garment manufacturer. Exports earn the bureau some β¦900 million a year, although more than half of this is from raw cotton. The largest plant outside Oslola is the Universal Cotton Plant of the West Indies in Antigua, which makes much of the clothing worn in Kalina.
Universal Cotton was established in 2016 and is headquartered at Universal Cotton House in Oslola. The bureau is governed by a general council under its General Secretary. It is listed on the Commsec as UCN.
