The Argo Meridian Corporation (known as Argo Meridian or Argo) is a shipbuilder owned by the government of the Commonwealth through the Bureau of the Merchant Marine. It comprises the majority of shipbuilding in the country, and builds almost every merchant vessel registered under the Commonwealth flag. It is independent from Leviathan Vast, which builds the capital ships of the navy, and the two companies have a historic rivalry. It is a devolved corporation with yards in nine republics, and was formed in 2016 from the old republic yards. Its headquarters are in Tortuga, Caimanas, and its largest yard is at the Caimana Islands Dockyards just outside the city. It is unusual for a public sector undertaking for its family management, which remained in place through nationalisation in the 1980s. As such, the Edwards family of Argo Marine remains influential in the successor company to this day. Its yards were laid out to the Heavy Factory Schematic System (HFS) of National Machines, and it has fewer workers per tonne of output than any other heavy industry in the Commonwealth.
Argo Meridian builds the patrol, frigate and destroyer families of the Universal Hull System, which serve over 200 vessels of the Maritime Service and Littoral Service. Its naval yards are inside the Armed Forces dockyards at Summers, Antigua, Ascension, Mira and Praia, and the Summers yard also refits the Relentless class of battlecruiser. Its commercial yards build most of the fleet of Commonwealth Lines, including bulk carriers, container ships and the rail RO/RO vessels common in the Caribbean, as well as the tankers of Commonwealth Oil. Almost all of them are nuclearised, with reactors supplied by General Reactor. A merchant ship is launched from the covered drydock at Freeport about every nine days, and the yard there is the largest employer in Bahama.
As the only builder of large merchant ships in the Commonwealth, Argo Meridian is essentially a functional monopoly, and almost all freight between the republics is carried on ships it built. Hull sections are cut, welded and painted by automatics, and most of its 33,000 staff are engineers, inspectors and crane crews.
It sells bonds on the Commsec as ARG. Argo is the third-largest shipbuilder in the world by tonnage, behind Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan and Philindo National Shipbuilding Corporation of Philindo.
