The Federation of Malaya is a constitutional monarchy occupying the Malay peninsula, governed through a rotating federal monarchy drawn from the royal houses of its constituent states. A traumatic and extended decolonisation from British rule separated Malaya from Borneo and Singapore, leaving the country a compact peninsular state with a diverse and at times fractious population. Ethnic and regional separatism has been a persistent feature of its politics since independence, particularly in the north and among provincial minorities who continue to reject the federal settlement.
Malaya is a middle income country with a substantial export economy built on rubber, palm oil and electronics manufacturing. It contributed significantly to the joint Thai-Malayan canal project across the Kra Isthmus, which has reshaped regional trade and given both countries considerable leverage over maritime commerce between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.
