The Commonwealth Parliament of Law is a ministerial parliament of the Commonwealth that governs policing, the courts and correction. Its seat is in Oslola, where most of its bodies have their headquarters. The parliament commissions every constable in the country, administers every court from the municipal heliaea to the Supreme Constitutional Court and follows criminal cases from the arrest to the penitentiary and, eventually, back to the convicts’ own municipalities.
Its professional seats are elected from the roll of advocates, which the Commonwealth Law Society draws up each year. The sortition seats are drawn from litigants in the courts and tribunals. The parliament also shares its constables with the Commonwealth Armed Forces. Police are trained as gendarmerie at the national military schools, and in wartime they mobilise as a military reserve. The prisons that correction depends on are mostly federal, since only a handful of republics maintain their own.
Broadly, the responsibilities of the Parliament of Law include:
- Commission and training of the police
- Administration of the courts, tribunals and circuits
- Prosecution of crime and representation of the accused
- Inquests and inquiries into wrecks and accidents
- Prisons and community corrections
- Legal advice to the federal government
- Publication of federal law
The parliament has a hand in virtually every dispute in the country, from tenancy hearings in Kairi to wreck inquiries in Nassau, and is sometimes at odds with the republic assemblies over the consolidation of their laws. Although its constables serve in almost every republic in the country, it cannot direct the courts, since the independence of all judges is guaranteed by the Constitution.
