Caribbea Cane S.p.A. is a bureau corporation that monopolises sugar cultivation, refining and manufacturing in the Commonwealth. It comprises dozens of constituent companies that manage over 212,000 hectares of cane farmland across Verde and Lucaya, as well as three super-refinery complexes that serve as the basis for the cultivated meat supply in the country. The production of synthetic meat requires a complex, staged process of refining and fermentation, as well as the cultivation of bacterial culture media necessary for the growth of synthetic meat. These super-refineries are responsible for the manufacture of the majority of the country’s meat supply.
Caribbea is both a traditional industrial cooperative and a strategic national enterprise under government direction. It is unique in its vertical integration, and exercises considerable influence over the agricultural and manufacturing stages of sugar cane and its associated products. Its most significant products are sugar, amino acids and growth media that form the basis of “cultivated meat,” the industry term for any synthetic meat. In the Commonwealth, this is primarily beef, chicken and lamb, which each require different industrial processes. To this end, it maintains large refineries in Praia, Bahama and Mira that are among the largest in the world, and each produce around 23 million tonnes of cane each year, outpacing all but the largest US plants. About eighty per cent of Commonwealth meat consumption today is from cultivated cane or tea.
In addition to the processing of cane for cultivation purposes, the bureau also produces the prerequisite vitamins, recombinant proteins and lipids that are necessary for the process. It also produces conventional sugar, primarily for export. Between its super-refineries, Caribbea produces about 4.8 million tonnes of sugar per year.
