Parliament of Milk and Honey

The Commonwealth Parliament of Milk and Honey is a ministerial parliament of the Commonwealth that governs work and the provision of goods in the commons. The name is taken from the biblical land of milk and honey. The parliament keeps the two service obligations of Commonwealth citizens, sets the conditions of work in every workplace and follows goods from raw material to the shop and, eventually, back to the salvage yard.

Its fourteen professional seats are elected by the workers of the commons from candidates nominated by the Commonwealth Industrial Congress and the Commonwealth Trades Congress. The sortition seats are drawn from residents at large, since every resident takes goods from the shops. The parliament also works from the figures of the Ministry of Accounts. Production targets are set from the ministry’s days of stock, and materials are valued at its Register. The machines, mines and wells that production depends on are held by the Ministry of Industry.

Broadly, the responsibilities of the Parliament of Milk and Honey include:

• Administration of Regular Service and Compulsory Service
• Placement in work of people who might otherwise have none
• Collective bargaining, workplace safety and labour standards
• Allocation of materials to industry
• Setting of quarterly production targets and the common specifications
• Distribution of goods between republics and keeping of the Commonwealth’s shops
• Collection, repair and recovery of goods leaving use

The parliament has an opinion on virtually everything, from shop counts in Verde to factory output in Oslola, and is often at odds with the municipal assemblies over their autonomy. Although its targets reach almost every factory in the country, it cannot command production directly, and depends a lot on the goodwill of the bureaus and municipalities that carry them out.
