Service Commonwealth Labour Service

The Bureau of Compulsory Service posts Commonwealth citizens to Corsosva, the four years of civic and military conscription served between the ages of 18 and 32, for the Parliament of Milk and Honey. Unlike a conventional conscription office, most of its work is civilian, since only a minority of people enter the armed forces as conscripts. Corsosva is primarily a means of getting done what needs to be done, because labour in the Commonwealth is fickle, irregular and otherwise free. The bureau’s headquarters are in Virgin, which is also home to the National Economic Register where every term of service is recorded.

Most people serve Corsosva in a single block, either after secondary school or after university. Individuals entering it elect their preferences for service, which are then weighted based on experience and ability. The most common forms are in construction, education and healthcare, and conscripts for the armed forces are posted with the Ministry of Defence. The Bureau of Parks and Gardens is a popular alternative for conscripts who wish to exclude themselves from military service, and many civil servants and constables take their first posting during their service. Personal work does not apply during Corsosva, where working time is set by the service.

Corsosva is not always desirable, and Commonwealth people do not desire it, but it has to be done. Since 2040, people completing their service have been rewarded with a National Tour, a half-year holiday on the cruise ships of Commonwealth Lines that visits every republic. The bureau issues the discharge papers that entitle them to it.
