The Bureau of Distribution is a bureau of the Parliament of Milk and Honey. It moves goods from the factory gate to the shelf, between Vekllei’s 83 republics and within them, and keeps the department stores, shops and markets of the commons. It is the largest bureau of the parliament by persons employed, and most of its staff are warehousemen, drivers and shop staff. It was established in 1958 as the Bureau of the Commons.
A Vekllei department store looks much like any other, with clothing sections, home goods, electronics and cosmetics across the floor. The bureau keeps the stores in incorporated areas with their municipalities, and the shops in the provinces directly. Residents take what they want and leave. The bureau’s shop staff count the stock and report it to the Bureau of Economic Forecasting, and keep the record of high value goods like watches.
Some shops carry more than others, since wealth in Vekllei is geographic. Towns with successful exporting firms stock foreign luxuries bought with their import credits, and the bureau carries them on its network like any other goods. Abuse of the shops is usually obvious and is punished as the crime of misdemeanour hoarding. The bureau recovers hoarded goods and returns them to the shelves. Furniture, appliances, clothing and machinery left at the salvage yards of the Bureau of Supply are also mended in its repair workshops and go back to the shops in the same way.
