The Bureau of Fisheries is responsible for commercial fishing and fish farming in the Commonwealth, and licenses the boats and farms that work its waters. It is part of the Ministry of Landscape, and was established in 1988 with its headquarters on Cama.
Fishing is done in nearly every republic, and on some islands, such as Guanima, it is still the most common registered occupation. A lot of the catch is tuna, grouper and marlin, much of it from the waters around Pico and Maria. Fishing grounds with no settled steward are held as intendancies under the sovereign areas, and catch quotas are set with the Bureau of Oceans, which is responsible for the sea itself.
Whaling has ended on Pico, where it once defined life on the island. Conch and spiny lobster are farmed at the marine station of Commonwealth Laboratories on Inagua, and the bureau’s research on reef fish is done with the Coral Cay Research Station of the LSRE in Conch.
