The Bureau of Oceans is responsible for the territorial waters of the Commonwealth and its exclusive economic zones, and for their charts and hydrography. It is part of the Ministry of Landscape, and was established in 1974 with its headquarters at Hydrographic House in Oslola.
The Commonwealth’s economic zone is one of the largest in the world, and the bureau licenses what is taken from its sea floor. The most valuable of it are the natural magnetic monopoles of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the Commonwealth is the largest producer of them in the world, with about 30 per cent of the market. Oil and gas fields at sea are licensed by the Bureau of Hydrocarbons, and fishing quotas are set with the Bureau of Fisheries. Policing at sea is done by the cutters of the Territorial Service, which also carry out customs and search and rescue work in Commonwealth waters.
