The Bureau of Reserves & Sanctuaries is a bureau of the Ministry of Landscape. It keeps the national parks and reserves of Vekllei and the wild land held by the Commonwealth outside them, from Arctic tundra in Kala to coral reefs in the Bahamas and the volcanic islands of the Atlantic. It was established in 1963 as the Bureau of Conservation, and took its present name when its pollution and land-use work passed to the other bureaus of the ministry.
The bureau keeps about 140 national parks and reserves, most of them small and on a single island. The bureau keeps their huts, paths and visitor stations, employs their rangers and keeps the register of protected species. Parks in towns and cities belong to the Bureau of Parks & Gardens under the Ministry of the Commons, and marine reserves to the Bureau of Oceans. Land claimed by the Land Sovereign as Crown Land is outside its jurisdiction.
