Ministry of the Interior

The Ministry of the Interior (COSMOSEA) is responsible for travel, transport and communication between the islands of Vekllei, and for its frontier. The ministry was named for the sea-lanes between the republics, which are the interior of the archipelago. It holds the railways, roads, ports, airports and spaceports of the Commonwealth, and the post and telephone networks that join them. Common responsibilities include:

• Rail, road, sea and air transport, and the operation of their ports and terminals
• The merchant marine and civilian maritime traffic in Commonwealth waters
• Spaceflight, the cosmodromes and off-world settlements
• The postal service and the telecommunications network, including spectrum
• Travel abroad for Vekllei people and for foreign visitors to the country
• Inspection of people and goods at the frontier

Local transit and the trains require nothing of their passengers, and most of the ministry’s work is the upkeep and operation of a free network. Public transport is operated by the Transport Commission, and its research by the Transport Laboratories. Air travel in incorporated areas is booked through the municipality or the workplace, and the ministry keeps the booking system they use.

The ministry is the second-largest by persons employed, after the Ministry of Defence. Most of its staff are railwaymen, seamen, postal workers and telephone engineers, and many are civil servants of its direct government enterprises. The Ministry of the Interior is led by its First Minister, elected from within by professional staff.
