The Interior Service is the statutory service of transport officers of the Ministry of the Interior. Its officers hold the senior posts of the Bureau of Rail, the Bureau of Roads and Paths, the Bureau of the Merchant Marine, the Bureau of Aerospace, the Bureau of Space and the Bureau of Travel, and of the Transport Commission.
Until 2006 each mode of transport had its own service, with its own examination. The Federal Transport Coordination commission merged them into a single service, so that officers could be posted between rail, shipping and air transport over a career. An officer of the Interior Service may run a harbour, then an airfield, then a section of railway.
