The Bureau of Inquests holds the inquests and public inquiries of the Commonwealth, and is a bureau of the Parliament of Law. Its coroners sit on deaths that are sudden, violent or unexplained, and its inquiry offices hear evidence on wrecks and serious accidents. The causes of air crashes are investigated by the Commonwealth Air Safety Board of the Bureau of Aerospace, and not by the bureau. The present name dates from 1971, when it took over the old Coroners’ Department of the republics.

Inquests are held in the courthouses kept by the Bureau of Courts, and in the smaller republics by the circuit. Verdicts are entered in the Civil Register of births and deaths, which is kept by the Bureau of Citizenship. Post-mortems are generally done in public hospitals, although the bureau also has its own pathology laboratory in Antigua. Deaths in the federal penitentiaries always go to an inquest.

The bureau’s work includes:

  • Inquests into sudden, violent and unexplained deaths.
  • Post-mortem examinations and the coroners’ mortuaries.
  • Marine inquiries into wrecks.
  • Inquiries into railway and industrial accidents.
  • Treasure trove.

Marine inquiries are the largest part of the bureau’s inquiry work, and most are held in Lucaya, whose reefs include the third largest in the world at Habacoa. The bureau’s marine office is in Nassau. Wrecks are generally searched by the Littoral Services, and many inquiries concern the ferries of Commonwealth Lines.
