The Commonwealth Law Society is an industry organisation that represents advocates and lawyers in the Commonwealth. It administers the roll of advocates each year, which provides the electorate for the professional elections to the Parliament of Law.
It is independent of the Parliament of Law and Government and serves as a professional association for lawyers of all kinds. To this end, it also keeps a law library in Oslola and publishes the reports of the Regional Appeal Courts.
Under Section 26 of the Civil Rights, every detained person has the right to choose and consult a legal practitioner, and the society keeps the list of advocates from which they choose. Most lawyers in the Commonwealth are officers of the Commonwealth Legal Service or advocates of the Public Chambers, and nearly all of them belong to the society.
The society also admits advocates to practice. A law graduate is admitted after a year of pupillage with a practising advocate, and the society’s examination is held each June in Antigua.
