Commonwealth University is the largest and oldest university in the Commonwealth, and the national university of the country. It is headquartered in Montre in Oslola, and has 20 constituents. Half of them are republic universities, which hold all their colleges in one republic, and half are national schools, whose colleges are spread across the country. 600,000 students are enrolled at the university, nearly three times as many as at CUWI, its historic rival. As at CUWI, most of its constituents are collegiate, and a student is usually a member of a college, a constituent university and Commonwealth University at once.

The university was founded in the 13th Century as a school for the clerks and lawmen of the Oslolan council, and for most of its history it taught law, theology and navigation in the city of Oslola. The old council school, a turf-roofed stone hall, still stands in the city and is used for graduations. After the war, most of the university moved to Montre, which had been home to the submarine fleet of the monarchy and was obliterated by bombs. The new Montre was built around the campus. Today, Montre is considered among the most learned cities in the world.

The University of Oslola is the seat of the federation and the largest of its constituents, and houses the Office of the Chancellor and the Examinations Board. Constituents set their own admissions and teaching, but degrees are awarded by Commonwealth University and bear its seal. Its standards, like those of every Commonwealth university, are set by the Curriculum and Qualifications Council. Because it is so large, admission is not especially competitive for a university of its standing.

Eight of its constituents are seated in Oslola. The national schools have colleges as far apart as Kairi, Summers, Caimanas, Fogo and Sude, and most of the smaller republics of the North Atlantic have their colleges in place of a university of their own. Its constituents include the University of Tenerife, the largest university in the Atlantic Region, and Polar University in Kala, the largest school within the Arctic Circle. The University of Tenerife also runs the observatory on Mount Teide jointly with Benahoare’s Our Lady of the Snows Observatory, and the University of Benahoare, on a new campus near Tedote, specialises in astronomy.

The university’s National Photonic Laboratories are the home of Commonwealth computer science, and are sponsored by National Machines. Many institutes and laboratories of the federal academies of the Bureau of Public Education are also affiliated with its campuses, and doctoral students working in them are students of the university.

Montre is linked to the city of Oslola and to Adouisneh by the magnetic-levitation express, the fastest train in the Commonwealth. It is also home to the more bohemian Montre School of Economics, and to dozens of small and unorthodox schools known as uoismendainda, or “underground schools”.
