Frontier and Levy Service

The Frontier and Levy Service is a constituent organisation of the Statutory Services.

Established 1972

The Frontier and Levy Service is the statutory service of frontier officers in the Commonwealth. Its officers staff the Bureau of the Frontier, which has about 300 offices at almost every port and airport in the country, and the port offices of the Bureau of Trade, where export cargoes are stamped and the federal levy is collected.

The frontier belongs to the Ministry of the Interior and the levy to the Ministry of Commerce, and so neither ministry could constitute the service alone. It was constituted in 1972 under the standing Common Services commission, which is also the cadre authority of the Revenue and Customs Service. Foreign tourists are charged package rates for what they consume in the country, and have their bags searched by the service on the way out.

Frontier officers are unarmed. Arrests at the ports are made by the Commonwealth Patrol Service of the Territorial Service, whose servicemen hold police endorsements for customs and immigration.
