The Economic and Statistical Service is the statutory service of economists, statisticians and planners in the Commonwealth. Most of its officers work in the three bureaus of the Ministry of Accounts, where they calculate the days of stock, conduct the census and compute the skill factor and reference prices. A smaller number work in the Bureau of Production, which sets production targets every quarter from those figures.
The service began as the planning detachments of the Commons Economic Preparation commission, which prepared the republics for the moneyless economy between 1977 and 1997. Their work turned out to be permanent, and in 1998 they were given a statute under the Ministry of Accounts, as occasionally happens when an interwork detachment meets a problem that does not end. Its officers are commonly called planners, and a lot of the economic planning of the commons is their work.
