The Bureau of Accreditation is responsible for the professional qualifications recognised by the federal government, and for the examinations by which civil servants are recruited. It is part of the Ministry of the Commonwealth, and was established in 1974.
Civil service is one of the most common occupations in the country. Entry to the civil service is competitive, and the open examination is set by the bureau’s Examinations Board and held jointly with the Commonwealth Central Secretariat. Successful candidates are trained at the Commonwealth School of Public Service at Fennel, on Mira.
Most professions outside government have their own examinations, such as that of the Commonwealth Law Society, held each June in Antigua, and school examinations belong to the Curriculum and Qualifications Council. The bureau recognises these qualifications for government posts, and through the Public Service Tribunal it also hears the discipline of public servants.
