The Commonwealth Treasury, commonly The Treasury, is the national treasury, financial department and monetary authority of Vekllei. The Treasury is ultimately responsible for the Vekllei tax system, government revenue and expenditure, and broad economic planning. The Treasury also maintains the GAIA automatic financial relay computer system, which has been the automatic mechanism for microeconomic policy in Vekllei since 2055.
The Treasury collects the sweep from every firm in the commons at the end of each quarter, and it is the largest source of domestic revenue. The sweep is the remainder of a firm’s accounted surplus once its reinvestment and the municipal and workplace share of 20 per cent have been set aside, so the revenue of the state falls in a bad year and the liquid capital of the firm is protected. The Treasury also pays the equalisation transfer to poorer municipalities once a year. There is no exchange rate between the republics, and regular trade imbalances between them are settled by the transfer instead. It also keeps the account of the commons debt, which is never called in.
Departments of the Treasury inform the monetary policy established by the Commonwealth Bank, and advises money supply and rate adjustments.
The Treasury is led by the Treasurer, a senior civil servant who reports to the First Minister of Commerce. Its departments are mostly autonomous and coordinate through the Department of the Treasury.
