The Bureau of Automatics regulates robots in the Commonwealth, mostly in industry and the municipal services. It advises the ministry on where automatics should be used, and sets the standards for the machines and for the command computers that drive them. It is part of the Ministry of Industry.
The bureau was established in 1989, as automatics were becoming common in Commonwealth industry. Their design goes back to the first industrial robots built in Poland earlier in the decade, which spread through the Soviet Union and are still the basis of most Commonwealth machines. Nearly every robot in the country is built by National Machines, and so the bureau’s testing board has a lot of influence over the company’s designs. The company is headquartered in Kala, and its laboratories in Barbados do most of the design work that the bureau approves.
