Established 1958

The Commonwealth Teaching Service is the statutory service of school inspectors and education officers of the Parliament of Education. Its members include the inspectors of schools, the officers of the 120 education districts, the moderators who sample passes for the Curriculum and Qualifications Council and the senior staff of the bureaus.

The service has about 4,000 members, nearly all of them former teachers admitted after some years in the classroom. Ordinary teachers are not members, and are employed by their education district. An inspector visits every school in the district at least once a year, unannounced, and spends the day at the back of a class. Since the uniform is worn by teachers as well as students, inspectors wear it too.
