The Commonwealth Medical Service is the statutory service of medical officers of the Parliament of Health. Its members are physicians in public health and administrative posts, including the medical officers of health in the republics, the epidemiologists of the Commonwealth Disease Commission, the inspectors of the Health Sciences Authority and the senior medical staff of the bureaus and federal hospitals.
Most doctors in the Commonwealth are not members of the service. Physicians in republic hospitals are licensed practitioners employed by the hospital, and vote in the professional elections to the Parliament of Health as practitioners. Physicians are admitted to the service after residency and a period of practice, and are trained in public health and administration at the Commonwealth Medical University.
