The Commonwealth Medical University is the most prestigious medical institution in the Commonwealth, and one of the major constituents of CUWI. It is located in Assumpción, the capital of Cama, and its students make up about an eighth of the republic’s total population. Like most constituents of CUWI it is a collegiate school, and its students are enrolled in autonomous colleges that control their own admissions and teaching.
The university can trace its origins to the Commonwealth Health Academy, which was founded in Kairi in 1963 to train the medical officers of the new Commonwealth Medical Service. It moved to Cama in the 1970s and took its present name when it joined CUWI. Physicians are still admitted to the service after residency and a period of practice, and are trained in public health and administration at the university.

Carriacou College is the largest, since most of the Commonwealth’s nurses are trained there. Cama and its minor inhabited islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are linked by hydrofoil, and students cross between them for lectures most days.
