Republic Assemblies of Vekllei

Part of the government series of articles.

The Republic Assemblies are the legislatures of the 83 republics of the Commonwealth. Each is elected by delegates of the municipal assemblies in its republic, and elects a First Secretary to head the republic’s government. Under the constitution, each republic writes its own laws and has its own lower courts.

Size varies with the republic. Oslola’s assembly has over 50 members and the smallest have about 15, and in Nassau the assembly sits in the pink Government House of the colonial period. Their governments take senior officials from the Commonwealth Administrative Service, and choose among the officers allotted to them. First Secretaries usually come from municipal leadership, although some assemblies have elected engineers, doctors and others from outside politics.

A republic is made up of incorporated areas, the municipalities and metropolises that hold a charter from it, and unincorporated areas such as the provinces. The provinces are farmland, outposts and stations run by the republican government directly, and in disputes over property there the republic puts the claim of the Public, as a municipal assembly does in its own town. Small islands too small to incorporate are often held as protectorates, and the nearest republic carries their services and their seat in its assembly.

The assemblies also have a part in several federal bodies. Each republic sends one delegate to the Mandatory Ecclesia, appointed by its First Secretary, and the First Secretaries of a region meet together in its Regional Assembly. Incorporation of a firm is granted by the republic assembly and then registered by the Bureau of Charters, and the members of the Treasury’s Equalisation Commission are appointed by the assemblies. When an assembly objects to the way the Commonwealth Register has consolidated one of its laws, the original wording is restored, and the Parliament of Law is sometimes at odds with the assemblies over it. Elected representatives of the republic assemblies also sit in the Parliament of Health.

Assembly elections have a cycle of their own, different from that of the municipalities and the Consilia, and are conducted by the Commonwealth Electoral Commission. Laws differ a lot from one republic to the next, and some are particular to a single island. In Yuma, the darkest sky in Lucaya is protected by an act of its assembly.
