The Commonwealth Consular School is a post-tertiary establishment associated with the Bureau of State that provides training for consular officers posted to the domestic and foreign missions of the Commonwealth. It serves a different purpose to the Commonwealth Foreign School, which provides instruction in the arts of foreign policy and statecraft. The Consular School instead serves the ordinary course of work of consular services, primarily in visa processing, emergency assistance and the administrative functions of consular posts including embassies, consulates and legations.
The Commonwealth foreign services are highly desirable and so highly competitive, and the standards set for consular officers are high. Consular officers are often paid a stipend in their host countries, so instruction is provided on responsible use of money.
Because Commonwealth citizens travelling abroad are introduced to money economies they are not familiar with, consular work has dimensions that are unusual by international standards. Officers are frequent points of contact for Commonwealth travellers who are travelling outside of the integrated travel system, including advice and repatriation, as well as close cooperation with the Bureau of Travel’s network of Atlantic Hotel properties and overseas offices.
