The Bureau of Light (commonly the Thunderburo) is responsible for electricity supply in the Commonwealth and for the national grid. It is part of the Ministry of Light and Water, and was established in 1952 with its headquarters at Thunderburo House in Oslola.
Most of the country’s power comes from three sources. The geothermal stations of the Magma-Electric Commission sit over the rift between the European and American plates, and their waste heat also warms the greenhouses that a lot of food is grown in. The fusion plants at Oslola and Kairi, which were among the first in the world to supply households, and dozens of fission stations are run by General Reactor, the nuclear bureau corporation, and the bureau licenses and inspects them through its Nuclear-Electric Commission. The Kairi plant opened in 2024, and supplies its heavy industries and neighbouring republics.
Hydro-electric dams are mostly in the glacial interior of the Vekllei Islands and in Kala, and the oldest of them, at Ou, has been running for over 150 years. Most republics have at least one power station held by the ministry as a sovereign area, and the fission stations use uranium-233 fuel from the National Centrifuge & Enrichment Plant in Speidisn.
