Military Ranks

βš”οΈ

Part of the state series of articles.

The Federal Military Establishment uses a single unified rank structure across its constituent services. Because Vekllei does not maintain separate military branches there are no service-specific rank titles. A grade means the same thing whether the holder serves aboard a frigate, in a territorial regiment, or at a radar station.

Instead, the Commonwealth military separates rank from positional title. Rank is a permanent institutional grade that reflects seniority; a positional title is a functional description of the appointment a person currently holds. A grade 7 Commander placed in charge of a company becomes a company commander; a grade 9 Secretary given command of a fleet is addressed as admiral for the duration of that appointment. Between appointments, servicemen revert to their rank title alone. This arrangement allows the FED to be flexible with command structures across interarmes operations without creating competing hierarchies between services.

Note: Vekllei does not gender occupational titles. ‘Serviceman’ refers to both male and female enlisted, as do equivalents like rifleman.
