The Central Records Service is the statutory service of archivists, registrars and librarians in the Commonwealth. Its officers staff the Bureau of Records and Correspondence, the Commonwealth Central Archives and the National Library, and its cadre authority is the Ministry of Culture.
Officers of the service are also posted to almost every other part of government. Each bureau keeps a registry of its files, and the registry is run by a records officer from the service who answers to the Ministry of Culture. Records officers decide which files are kept and which are destroyed under the Commonwealth’s records schedules, and transfer permanent records to the Central Archives.
