Atlantic College is a federated technical college of the Commonwealth, with its main campus in Oslola. It can trace its origins to the Oslola Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in 1902 by subscription among the city’s engineers and shipwrights. It took its present name in 1935, when the British Atlantic Territories became the independent Commonwealth of Oceans, and the Institute’s brick lecture hall still stands at the centre of the Oslola campus.
Today it has 41 campuses across the country, more than any other Commonwealth university, and about 90,000 students. Trades are studied there in the same classrooms as engineering and the natural sciences, and a plumber and a physicist may take some of the same units. Most campuses are small and teach the work of their republic. In a quirk of the nesting system, its college at Karu is also a constituent college of the University of Karu, and its students are enrolled at both.
Several specialist schools are attached to the college, including the Atlantic College of Journalism and the Saint Gabriel Telegraph Training College in Oslola. It is also the usual place of study for students leaving the studio and technical schools. Its students are known as “Mechanics,” after the old Institute, and the name is still used as a compliment.
