Littoral Service

The Littoral Service is a constituent organisation of the Ministry of Defence.

The Littoral Service (the Coast Guard or Navy of the Parliament) is the maritime security component of the Armed Forces of Vekllei, administered through the Ministry of Defence. It provides customs enforcement, policing and search and rescue across the Commonwealth’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zones, though its patrols frequently extend into international waters.

The distinction between the Littoral Service and the Maritime Service is partly political. Republic frigates and littoral cutters share the same Universal Hull System hulls, and in wartime the Littoral Service federalises into the Maritime Service entirely. In peacetime, the separation keeps law enforcement and customs work under parliamentary oversight rather than military command β€” a distinction that matters in a country where the navy is the military. Littoral crews train alongside Maritime Service personnel and share maintenance facilities, so the transition from customs patrol to wartime screening is procedural rather than practical.

The service operates through 12 regional commands covering the Atlantic, Arctic, Antarctic and Caribbean, each shaped by the specific challenges of its waters β€” from Arctic icebreaking to Caribbean anti-narcotics interdiction.

The Littoral Service operates a fleet ranging from destroyer-hulled heavy cutters for blue-water patrol to small hydrofoils and hovercraft for inshore pursuit, with significant air support provided by the Air Service for maritime patrol and search and rescue. Heavy customs cutters share the Universal Destroyer Hull with the Maritime Service’s warships, giving the Littoral Service genuine combat capability when federalised in wartime β€” a deliberate choice that blurs the line between constabulary and military force.
