Large parts of the country have outlawed the sale of cigarettes, and so pipes are the most common way of enjoying tobacco. There is no federal ban on cigarettes or their consumption, and they remain popular corporate imports as employee rewards. But many republics now outlaw their provision in corner stores in place of loose tobacco and pipes.
The Commonwealth Caribbean has a long tradition of tobacco cultivation and many people smoke local varieties recreationally. The pipe has several advantages – less litter, less cancer, and it also slows consumption. The cigarette break, associated with wage drudgery and existential thinking, has mostly been displaced by “sophisticated” and “cool” pipe time.
