The Aurora-class republic frigate is a type of frigate of the Marine Services of Vekllei. It represents the most numerous class of ocean-going warship in the Commonwealth, with each of the 78 constituent republics operating at least one vessel. The class is designed for maritime policing and patrol, and serves as the primary naval presence for most Vekllei republics.
The Aurora-class emerged from the “universal warship” doctrine established during post-independence naval reorganisation. While larger fleet units concentrate in major naval stations like NS Kairi, these frigates provide distributed presence across Vekllei’s vast Atlantic and Caribbean territories. They function semi-autonomously from central fleet command, with strong ties to their home republics and crews often drawn from local populations.
At the stern, a single arm missile launcher feeds from a large cylindrical drum magazine capable of holding 16 missiles in a revolver-like arrangement. This system allows the vessel to carry mixed loads of No. 3 Rackham anti-air missiles and No. 6 Shemozzle anti-ship missiles, with the drum rotating to select the appropriate weapon. Forward armament consists of a single 76mm automated gun with a close-in weapon system for point defence.
The class is powered by a modular Vampire marine nuclear power plant, a sealed unit requiring minimal crew intervention. This gives the vessels effectively unlimited range and weeks of patrol endurance without refuelling. A telescoping hangar aft accommodates either a small helicopter or helijet, useful for extending sensor coverage and providing rescue capability.
For many small republics, their Aurora-class frigate represents not just their entire naval capability but a significant source of local pride and connection to the broader Commonwealth. The return of a vessel to home port is often a cause for celebration among the smaller islands.
