Mercy

The International Levy for Atlantic Mercy is one of 3 quasi-sovereign orders in Vekllei. They are among the purest expressions of the country’s relentless internationalism and moral clarity.

They are secular by charter but often attract religious members, since they demand life-long vows. Those vows fundamentally distinguish them from other aid giving organisations. When all others pull out as the government collapses or the violence approaches, members of the Levy are sworn to die in the service of mercy. Many of them do; they have lost 47 members in 50 years.

Vekllei federalism is uniquely moralistic; they believe in universal truths largely incompatible with international norms around sovereignty. Perhaps this explains their diverse radicalism, employing nuns, communists and gangsters for their own purposes with clear conscience.
