Naval Station Mira is a major Vekllei naval facility located just outside Fennel on the island of Mira. Established by Portugal in the early 20th century, it originally served as a strategic outpost for the defence of Portuguese colonies and the protection of trade routes between Europe, Africa and South America. Since its transition to Vekllei control, the station has evolved into a modern installation supporting advanced destroyer forces in the eastern Atlantic.
The facility serves as the primary base for Swordfish-class escort destroyers, which provide air defence for Atlantic shipping lanes. Its infrastructure includes automated ship repair docks, nuclear refuelling facilities and advanced communication systems for monitoring regional maritime traffic. As a cornerstone of maritime security in the eastern Atlantic, the station frequently coordinates search and rescue missions and environmental monitoring. The base is closely integrated with the Fennel community and remains a significant contributor to the island’s economy and naval heritage.
