Naval Station Helvasia is the northernmost naval installation of the Vekllei Maritime Service. Located in the remote Arctic archipelago of Helvasia, it serves as the primary headquarters for Arctic maritime operations. The facility was originally established as a Norwegian coaling station in the early 20th century before being expanded during World War II to function as a weather monitoring outpost and staging base for Arctic convoys. Given the harsh conditions and its strategic position, the station is a vital component of Vekllei’s northern maritime defence strategy.
Today the facility operates as a Maritime Service fortress and a central hub for Arctic Fleet operations. The station is equipped with specialised cold-weather infrastructure, including ice-strengthened berthing, Arctic survival training centres and advanced meteorological systems. Its presence provides oversight of Arctic shipping lanes and acts as a deterrent to Soviet territorial ambitions in the region. Beyond its military role, the station supports scientific expeditions and environmental monitoring efforts in the High Arctic.
