The Republic of Thailand is a constitutional republic in Southeast Asia, formed after the abolition of the monarchy in the mid-twentieth century. It is a pluralistic democracy and has maintained regular elections since independence, though the agrarian socialist Thai National Party has held government for much of that period. The party draws its support from the rural majority and has pursued land reform and cooperative agriculture as its central programme, while remaining broadly conservative on social and cultural matters.
Thailand is a traditionalist country despite its republican constitution. Buddhist institutions remain central to public life and carry considerable moral authority, and the Thai National Party has largely governed with rather than against them. The country is stable by regional standards and has avoided the insurgencies that trouble several of its neighbours, though tensions along its Laotian borders persist.
