The Medium Customs Cutter is the primary ocean-going patrol vessel of the Littoral Service of Vekllei. The class shares its hull and basic systems with the Aurora-class republic frigate of the Maritime Service, adapted for the specific requirements of customs, fisheries and border patrol duties. Operating across 12 regional commands spanning the Atlantic, Arctic, Antarctic and Caribbean, these cutters form the backbone of Commonwealth maritime law enforcement and search and rescue operations.

Forward armament consists of a single 76mm automated gun, retained from the naval design but primarily used for warning shots and ice breaking rather than combat. The weapon system includes reduced ammunition stowage compared to the frigate variant, with space reallocated to mission-specific equipment. Most cutters also mount water cannons for riot control and firefighting.

The stern helicopter facilities are expanded compared to the frigate, with a larger hangar capable of accommodating customs inspection equipment, rigid-hull inflatable boats and additional rescue gear. The flight deck retains the oversized dimensions of the naval design, proving particularly valuable for medevac operations and offshore boarding missions. Most cutters operate small helicopters equipped for maritime patrol and search and rescue rather than combat.

The superstructure houses standard communications and surveillance equipment suited to law enforcement operations. The sensor suite emphasises surface search radar optimised for small craft detection, with some vessels carrying infrared surveillance systems for night operations. The integrated mast includes additional antennae for coordinating with international maritime authorities and civilian distress frequencies.

Below decks, the cutter configuration features holding cells for detained persons, secure storage for seized contraband, expanded medical facilities for rescue operations, and a larger galley to support extended patrols with rescued personnel aboard. The vessel can accommodate up to 20 additional persons in emergency rescue situations, though normal complement remains 48.

Like its frigate counterpart, the Medium Customs Cutter is powered by a modular Vampire marine nuclear power plant. This provides unlimited patrol endurance, essential for maintaining presence across Vekllei’s vast exclusive economic zones. The nuclear plant also supplies abundant electrical power for law enforcement equipment, surveillance systems and rescue facilities.

The boarding and inspection equipment includes two rigid-hull inflatable boats deployed via davits amidships, boarding ladders and grappling systems for vessel interdiction, and a crane for transferring seized cargo or assisting disabled vessels. Some cutters operating in ice-prone regions feature strengthened bows and additional fendering, though these remain distinct from purpose-built icebreakers.

Crew complement of 48 includes customs officers, fisheries inspectors and search and rescue specialists alongside traditional maritime ratings. The law enforcement team typically numbers 8-12 personnel, with additional space for specialist teams during specific operations. The relatively small crew size reflects extensive automation in ship systems inherited from the naval design.

The Medium Customs Cutter serves multiple roles depending on regional command requirements. In the Caribbean and Antilles, these vessels conduct anti-narcotics patrols and migration interdiction. In the North Atlantic, they focus on fisheries enforcement and search and rescue for transatlantic shipping. Arctic deployments emphasise resource security and scientific mission support.

With a displacement of 2,000 tonnes and length of 100 metres, the cutters balance ocean-going capability with accessibility to smaller republic ports. The vessels regularly operate in challenging conditions from Arctic ice to Caribbean hurricanes, with the nuclear plant providing both unlimited range and the electrical capacity to support diverse mission requirements.

The class operates across Vekllei’s 12 regional Littoral commands, with individual vessels often covering territories spanning thousands of square kilometres. The modular nuclear plant allows cutters to remain on station for weeks at a time, returning to port only for crew rotation and resupply rather than refuelling. This patrol endurance makes them particularly valuable for monitoring remote regions where conventional diesel vessels would require frequent replenishment.

For most regional commands, Medium Customs Cutters represent the largest and most capable vessels available for law enforcement operations. They coordinate with smaller patrol craft like the Municipal-class hydrofoils and Wake-class launches for inshore work, while providing the blue-water capability necessary for extended offshore patrols and major rescue operations.
